3/23 - INTRO TO BACKCOUNTRY SKI/SPLITBOARD
This two-day course will take you to the backcountry of Mt. Hood, where you will learn how to efficiently travel up-hill and earn your turns in breathtaking scenery. Spend the first day learning equipment orientation and use, avalanche awareness, mountain weather, basic navigational skills, emergency preparedness, and backcountry riding techniques. Your guides will teach you different techniques and tips to make your travel more efficient and your experience more enjoyable. Your second day will take you further out into the backcountry, where you can put your newfound knowledge to use as you seek untracked lines. Meet your guide at a local gear shop in Portland, Oregon the evening before your course to size boots and pick-up rental gear. The next morning you’ll meet at Rare Earth Adventure’s office in Troutdale for a quick gear check, then load up and head to the mountain. Once we’ve reached the trailhead and geared up we will move together to a location for the educational portion of the trip and spend several hours learning the skills required to spend time in avalanche country. After lunch, we’ll climb up to gain maximum elevation for your ride back to the van. On day 2, you’ll put your newly learned skills to the test with a day of skinning and riding. This trip includes: A professional guide, transport to and from REA office, AT skis or splitboards, and avalanche gear. Does not include: meals or overnight accommodation. This trip is NOT designed for a beginning snowboarder/skier, but for an experienced snowboarder/skier with little or no backcountry experience. 12/14 - CRATER LAKE WINTER CAMPING
For those desiring a winter backcountry adventure in a spectacular setting, snowshoeing around Crater Lake on the unplowed Rim Drive is an unforgettable experience. Crater Lake National Park receives an average of 44 feet of snow every year. During the winter, trails and unplowed roads provide skiers and snowshoers with access to open slopes, dense forests, and breathtaking views, making it ideal for both day-trippers and backcountry visitors. Once an active volcano (Mount Mazama), this now clear, deep blue crater lake is 6 miles across and nearly 2,000 feet deep at its maximum depth (it’s the deepest lake in the U.S. and 9th deepest in the world). With over 100 miles of hiking trails offered in Crater Lake National Park, there is plenty to explore and discover! Day 1: Departing from the Rare Earth Adventures office in Troutdale, the group will drive 5 hours to Crater Lake, stopping for lunch along the way. Upon arrival, you’ll snowshoe in 1 mile to Discovery Point and set up camp for the evening. Days 2-3: You’ll spend the next two days snowshoeing along Rim Drive, taking in the stunning vistas, snow-covered peaks, and of course views of Crater Lake. Camping locations and daily mileage will vary based on group speed and experience.Day 4: After breaking camp, you’ll snowshoe the short distance back to the trailhead before heading back to Troutdale.This trip includes: Permits, transport to and from REA office, snowshoes and trekking poles, group gear (tents, stoves, etc), avalanche gear, and meals (except lunches en route).
