12/14 - CRATER LAKE WINTER CAMPING
For those desiring a winter backcountry adventure in a spectacular setting, snowshoeing around Crater Lake on the unplowed Rim Drive is an unforgettable experience. Crater Lake National Park receives an average of 44 feet of snow every year. During the winter, trails and unplowed roads provide skiers and snowshoers with access to open slopes, dense forests, and breathtaking views, making it ideal for both day-trippers and backcountry visitors. Once an active volcano (Mount Mazama), this now clear, deep blue crater lake is 6 miles across and nearly 2,000 feet deep at its maximum depth (it’s the deepest lake in the U.S. and 9th deepest in the world). With over 100 miles of hiking trails offered in Crater Lake National Park, there is plenty to explore and discover! Day 1: Departing from the Rare Earth Adventures office in Troutdale, the group will drive 5 hours to Crater Lake, stopping for lunch along the way. Upon arrival, you’ll snowshoe in 1 mile to Discovery Point and set up camp for the evening. Days 2-3: You’ll spend the next two days snowshoeing along Rim Drive, taking in the stunning vistas, snow-covered peaks, and of course views of Crater Lake. Camping locations and daily mileage will vary based on group speed and experience.Day 4: After breaking camp, you’ll snowshoe the short distance back to the trailhead before heading back to Troutdale. This trip includes: Permits, transport to and from REA office, snowshoes and trekking poles, group gear (tents, stoves, etc), avalanche gear, and meals (except lunches en route).
