Smart Wool

Smart Wool
The days of heavy and itchy wool are a thing of the past. Two New England ski instructors, Peter and Patty Duke, founded Smart Wool in 1994. Their proprietary treatment took merino wool and created products that were not only itch free but resistant to shrinking. Smart Wool was born and has become the wool of today with the added benefits of moisture wicking and odor reducing with its anti-microbial features.

About Smart Wool

In 2005, Smart Wool was acquired by Timberland Company and in so doing placed restrictions on the practice of mulesing, a procedure of removing the wool producing skin from around the buttocks of the sheep. This has been a controversial practice. Mulesing was done to reduce the risk of myiasis, a parasitic infestation, in sheep. Nevertheless, some saw this as a cruel and painful procedure. Smart Wool’s mission promises to provide positive changes in the world through accountability and demonstrating compassion and respect to humankind.

The range of SmartWool Clothing is comprehensive ranging from socks to everyday wear. The popularity of Smart Wool base layers is due to their incredible warmth. The Smart Wool Microweight Bottoms for men are extremely lightweight and feature a smooth embossed logo elastic waistband providing the ultimate in comfort. Additionally, the flatlock seam construction eliminates chafing in this undergarment, and it can be washed repeatedly without risk of shrinking. On the other hand, Smart Wool provides a line of heavier undergarments. The Smart Wool Midweight Bottoms for women are perfect for those alpine environments when the temperature drops to well below zero. These bottoms are made from 100 percent merino wool interlock knit with a UPF of 50+. This heavier bottom provides the right amount of insulation to keep you cozy during the worst winter day.

Smart Wool offers the light fabrics as well as the heavier lines of merino wool knits. The Smart Wool Microweight Crew is perfect as a base layer in cold conditions or great by itself when the sun comes out and heats the day. It is soft to the touch and versatile for any outdoor activity like trail running, hiking and climbing. A heavier version can be found in the Smart Wool Midweight Crew. When extra warmth and insulation is needed this 100 percent merino wool interlock knit does the job. The crew neck and form offer an attractive fit. The shoulder panels eliminate shoulder seams and flatlock seam construction eliminates chafing.

The Smart Wool designs guarantee the appropriate garment for the various conditions you will encounter. The Smart Wool Midweight Zip for women provides the warmth of 100 percent merino wool interlock knit with the UPF 50+ similar to other Midweight garments, but the eight inch center front zip with a semi locking slider provides that extra versatility for adjusting body temperature as the day changes. The back body seams wrap to the front for an attractive fit. Smart Wool knows how to keep you warm and comfortable as you endure the outdoors activities that bring a smile to your face.
